Product Description

Product Description

The BHAGAVAD GITA tells the story of how Arjuna the great warrior is seated in his chariot about to engage in battle when he sees his own kinsmen and his revered teacher arrayed in battle against him and he feels that he cannot fight. It is then that Krishna the Cosmic Lord comes to counsel him. Arjuna represents the human soul seated in the chariot of the body and Krishna is the inner Spirit the God within who is there to counsel him. Today we are only too aware that humanity is divided against itself and as a result many are driven to despair. This message of the Gita comes to teach us that it is only when we rise above human schemes and calculations and awake to the presence of the indwelling Spirit that we can hope to find an answer to our need. ¨ A classic scripture of the East interpreted for modern readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterly rendition of an ancient eastern work, 22 Sep 2002
The Bhagavad Gita is a centuries-old treasury of timeless wisdom. Swami Satchidananda presents this priceless work to the modern English reader. All the original slokas are translated into English, supported by valuable commentaries on their meaning and relevance in the modern world. The highest thinking, the deepest wisdom, is found here. Modern life is rooted in deep-seated ignorance, in a focus on the most basic of sense pleasures. For an antidote, reach for this very accessible version of a master-work.

2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting read, 9 April 2009

I'm still reading the book and it still isn't giving me much. Maybe it's because I'm not a novice anymore when it comes to understanding the self or because my expectations are really out there. I am reaping some insights from it though and am thoroughly enjoying the tale of Arjuna and Krishna.

I'd suggest this book to anyone who is interested in reading the Gita. As far as the commentary goes, it's not that profound yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clearly expressed wisdom, 10 April 2008
By D. Waite (UK) - See all my reviews

A supremely readable commentary for the modern reader. Strictly speaking, this is Yoga rather than Advaita but that really does not matter - it is full of clearly expressed wisdom. If you want to discover the essential message of the Gita and its relevance to modern life (and enjoy the reading experience too) this is definitely the book you should get.

Dennis Waite, author of 'Back to the Truth: 5000 years of Advaita'
