5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent window to explore the many facets of Vodou, 19 Dec 2003
By Mister P (Birmingham, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I had been after this title for sometime. I heard about the UCLA exhibit about the arts of Vodou in late 98 and tried to get this title from regular suppliers without success. I was pleased to find it on Amazon and can honestly say that it was well worth the wait when it finally arrived. This book is so much more than the usual ‘coffee table’ book on a muesem exhibit. The contributors are all acknowledged experts in their particular fields and bring depth and insight to the amazing and informative full colour illustrations. All the people that I know find that that, even if they are sceptical about the Vodou, a quick flick through the pages brings something new to draw you in to this fascinating subject. Generally, the book is easer going than other texts that I have read on this subject. It was refreshing that the arts and ritual etc. described were obviously a part of the practitioners every day lives & not event described from the point of view of a supposedly ‘impartial’ observer; who places the reader outside of the ‘mind set’ the unfolding events. I would say that this book is a must for all people interested in Vodou or native African sources of these belief systems.
