This is still some of the funniest, most touching, extraordinsry, surprising and vivid writing I have come across. It's transcriptions of Gray's monologues which he performed all over the world. He's a storyteller. Because the original text is spoken, the style is immediately informal, crammed with asides, fascinating sidetracks and historical detail. The main text, 'Swimming to Cambodia' is a riveting, multi-layered account of his experiences as an actor during the filming of 'The Killing Fields' which shows what happened to Cambodia when the Khmer Rouge took over in 1966 through the story of a friendship between two journalists. Other highlights for me are 'Sex and Death to Age 14', 'Booze, Cars and College Girls' and '47 Beds'. It's fiery, irreverent, confessional without being cloying, wickedly sharp and Gray's demented, shameless self-awareness keeps me going back to it after lesser scribbling fades away. Buy it. A gem.

This book came about from a one-man show performed by Gray and gradually refined into a consistent script and show. He had a fairly small part in the epic 1984 movie 'The Killing Fields' and this monologue describes his experiences during filming and some of his thoughts about the film, about Cambodia, and the Cold War in general. It is a classic piece of theatre captured in book form and brings to mind the gonzo journalism of Hunter S Thompson or the streams of consciousness of Jack Kerouac. It is a modern classic and you have to read it.
