5.0 out of 5 stars non more black?, 28 Mar 2002
By A Customer
I have to admit to not being a strict black metal fan, although I certainly find the scene terribly intriuging.Moynihan and Soderlind offer up a compelling, intelligent and ultimatley insightful book on the relatively untapped Norwegian black metal underworld.
Focusing on the prime movers of the scene, the book sees through the sadisitc and childish behaviour of some of these unsavoury characters and tries to discover possible motives for thier bizarre and awful crimes aswell as serving as a who's who of a small but powerful genre.A book thats hard to put down for it's sheer dedication for it's subject and the often (not meant) hilarious quotes from band members!
Having said that, it seems fitting that through-out the book it sustains a constant dark and eerie feel, some sections are downright shocking.A must for anyone with a love (or should that be hate?) for any type of music.Unlikely to be bettered!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wanna know more about "the most extreme form of music on the planet"? Then read on... , 14 Jan 2007
By M. J. Pucci "Big Riff" (Milton Keynes, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
As anyone reading this will no doubt already be aware, black metal's notoriety reached its peak in the mid-nineties following a spate of well-publicised church burnings and the murder of one its leading figures. `Lords of Chaos' documents the rise of the black metal scene in Norway, as well as exploring the profound effect it had elsewhere (notably, Europe and America) and as such this is a book no self-respecting black metal fan should be without. But even for those with no interest in metal - black or otherwise - 'Lords of Chaos' makes for a truly fascinating, chilling read...

In a clear, well-researched style, the authors, Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind, provide an insight into the cultural, socio- and psychological factors which helped create the scene and inform the mindset of its earliest and most uncompromising advocates. What sets this book apart from the average rock biog - aside from the subject matter - is the genuine, first-hand feel its authors have managed to create, thanks largely to their own hard work in gaining access to those directly involved in the events described, and the subsequent rawness of the interviews conducted. And, despite the extremity of many of the viewpoints expressed within this book, the authors remain objective and non-judgmental throughout, leaving the reader to draw his or her own conclusions.

Highly recommended.

Matt Pucci

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 9 May 2004

I've been a fan of heavy meal for some time now, but I've always wondered what the more extreme aspect of the genre. This book is a briliant introduction to the early nineties Norweigan scene as it hyped itself to the max through the grisly enterprises of Varg Vikernes and Oystein Aarseth et al. Full of the styles history, main characters, and deep explanations into why Scandinavia?
