This is the second part of Dave Sim's 'Church & State' epic. In book one we see Cerebus rise to Prime Ministerhood for the second time only to be then nominated Pope. This is the second part of that story, which sees him rise to Valhala to meet the Creator. It also features parodies of Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, which are absolutely hilarious.

The novel has many different sides to it. There's the religious side, which questions the idea of organised religion in the first place and put into question the morality of those at the top. There the humourous side of the story that sometimes is very noticeably absent but sometimes all to present. There is also the side that analyses human relations and all that comes with it.

It is impossible to start reading this novel and understand the characters without having previously read Church & State I. Do not attempt it.

All in all it's a book that can be fun to read at first but if you go through it again (and again...) you'll find yourself realising things that you didn't quite notice the previous time you read it. Be warned though that in order to read Church & State part I and II one after the other you will require a lot of free time. I found myself very hard put to stop reading but the 2 novels put together make up an impressive 1222 pages.

I must admit that I'm a fan of Cerebus in any case and that I'm quite biased as I think that Dave Sim is a great author. In an age when there are many lack-lustre wannabes, Cerebus shines through with its mix of philosophical ideas and knee-slapping humour.
