3.0 out of 5 stars Is plywood the only material available ?, 21 Nov 2002
By s bowers (Ceyras France) - See all my reviews
Please don't get me wrong - I enjoyed this book - it's got many good tips even if it's somewhat outdated (1991).
The main bugbears I had were it's almost total reliance on 3/4 inch plywood (expensive and unnecessary) and the fact that the title is a bit of a misnomer. Make 'your own' cabinets - hardly, and here's why. If you took Mr Cary's advice and made the various jigs he suggests you'ld very quickly double the price of your kitchen and it's not everyone who has a professional workshop in his back yard to do it in. The book is pitched at people making kitchens for others. Who's going to spend two or three days making a 'cutoff box' for one kitchen?
Having said that I thought the plan for the router table and other points such as the cutting lists were good.
If you like all your measurements in Imperial, if you like plywood and you want a John-Boy Walton type kitchen, then this is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book in the fundamentals of cabinet building., 26 Jan 1998
By A Customer
From layout of kitchen through installation, Jere Cary takes you thru each step of construction. Especially helpful are standard dimensions, options, and what to do if you goof. This book is helpful if you are building any casework, whether it has shelves, doors, or drawers. Don't let the title lead you to think it's only for kitchen cabinets.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the beginning cabinet maker!, 30 Oct 1998
By A Customer
I found Mr. Cary's book to be a worthwhile investment in time and money! He is very detailed oriented, without being redundant or boring, when describing each phase of building your cabinet. He provides you with step-by-step prodecures that are clear and easy to follow! He also provides helpful hints on how to avoid mistakes and what can be done when mistakes are made. This book is a must have for those who have two left thumbs like me!
