If you like Cordwainer Smith (Paul Linebarger, 1913-1966), this is the book to buy. If you don't yet know his wonderful poetic imagination, then take the plunge.

In this volume - but not in the volume of the same name published by Gollancz in 1999 - you get everything Smith wrote, including a story, "Down to the Sunless Sea", which was written by Genevieve, his wife, but published under Smith's name.

Smith's world is rich and full of moral possibilities and ambiguities. Smith's Christian faith sometimes breaks through, especially in "The Dead Lady of Clown Town" (perhaps my personal favourite) but he never resorts to crude allegory. There is a darkness in many of the stories which mean that the shafts of light are all the more intense.

Smith's 'future history' is full and satisfying, though inevitably occasionally self contradictory. If you've already sampled a little, read the rest; if you've not started yet, waste no more time.
