4.0 out of 5 stars Gives you the back-up to talk 'engines' with V-Dub fanatics, 15 April 2001
By A Customer
This book has given me the confidence to get involved in those converations about VW engines that I felt out of my depth in before. Covering techniques ranging from those needed to add a little power on to you street engine right through to building a more advanced drag racer engine. Things that I would have avoided even looking into doing to my engine are well within reach now with this book (or it's nice to think that they are!). It must be used in conjunction with the normal VW service manual. Definitely a useful book for anyone who's tired of being tail-gated by those young whippersnappers in their hot-hatches!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Old School Speed, 13 Jan 2010
By P. A. Harrison (Eastbourne) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you are looking for information on creating 200bhp monsters from the air-cooled engine or detailed info on forced induction or fuel injection then this book is not for you. The book was written in the early 70s and clearly has not been updated since (prices are quoted for a lot of the items - eg $100 for 48IDAs!), however.... If you are looking to build an old school motor or a single port Vintage Speed engine then its perfect. Bill Fisher has clearly put a lot of research into the book and this shows, especially in the chapters on head work, which is extremely well done.
In summary, there are probably a lot more modern and therefore more concise books on getting the most from the VW aircooled engine, but as a resource for "Period" speed this is fantastic, and there is a good reason why this book has stayed in print for over 35 years.
