Iron Road to Whisky country, 7 Feb 2003
Pearson's enthusiasm for Rail travel comes across from the beginning of this book. As someone who regularly travels on this line I have found the book adds a new dimension to the journey. Pearson uses the well tried formula common to his 'Iron road' series of covering this route section-by-section with a map and an accompanying narrative. The information contained is accurate and very interesting, and certainly adds to the enjoyment of the journey. The photographs are appropriate and of a high standard throughout, and the Gazetteer section contains a great deal of useful information. Perhaps the only negative aspect of the book is Pearson's extreme partisan attitude, favouring all things to do with rail travel, which can be tiresome at times. However, it is a very good book, and I commend it highly to anyone travelling in the NE Scotland region, particularly, but not exclusively, by Rail. Incidentally, you don't have to be a Railway 'Anorak' to enjoy this book.
