5.0 out of 5 stars It will make you want to be there, 16 Jun 2003

The essence of any good travel guide is that you find it frustrating to remain in your armchair. This is the latest edition of Pennine Waters, and shows the refinement that has characterised all of Pearson's recent offerings. As ever, the maps are superbly detailed, so that you know exactly where you are. They are attractively drawn and coloured, too. Bridges, locks, towpath quality, nearby roads, pubs, winding holes, local topography, boatyards, important shops - everything you need is there.
But it is not just for the maps that Pearson's Canal companions are so deservedly popular. The commentary about each section, with interesting facts about the route liberally spiced with shafts of wit, and occasional acidity, is a delight. Like any good map, this is a book to savour both before and after making a journey. This is a particularly good one, and deserves to be snapped up by anyone with an enthusiasm for traditional forms of transport. You will read it and be looking up your nearest boatyard, or sitting back with a host of fond memories.

Friendly and much easier to use than Nicholson's ... always good for pubs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the canal virgin., 10 May 2009

I brought this as was going on a narrow boat for the first time (50th B'day present!). It is very informative and accurate and allowed us to work out in advance our route with stops at places to visit and more importantly eat and drink (the books are updated regularly). I just felt it gave us more confidence before we set out and made our trip far more enjoyable having answered many of the questions we had before getting on the boat and knowing that we had plenty of time to do everything without worrying about how long it takes to do each section of the canal.
