Product Description

Product Description

Turn the dream into reality.

If you dream of running away to sea in your own boat and sailing over the horizon to find a new life, then read on.

Since moving aboard their yacht in 1984 the authors have cruised 25,000 relaxed, even hedonistic miles, and the lessons they have learned – both practical and psychological – are described within these pages. This book is not aimed at the would–be circumnavigator (although it has much to interest him) but at the weekend sailor for whom the annual fortnight′s cruise is never long enough. It matters little whether you plan to escape for six months, a couple of years or forever. Nor does it matter if your destination is the Mediterranean, the Caribbean or the Great Barrier Reef: this book is still for you.

June and Bill Raper are long–standing members of the (British) Cruising Association and have recently attained Commodore status of the (US) Seven Seas Cruising Association.  In these pages they hope to pass on the benefit of their extensive experience to those already planning to sail away, as well as to many who are still at the dreaming stage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent advice for the novice global yachtsperson, 9 Nov 2000
By A Customer
This is a thoroughly practical and extremely useful book for anyone intending to sail off for a protracted period of living on board their yacht and cruising foreign waters. The authors' long years of experience shine through. There is no "filling" - just plain fact and considered opinions set out clearly and easy to find. The lists given in the appendices are themselves justification for buying the book. I rank it very highly and (as Practical Boat Owner wrote) found it is well worth a "tenner".

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best practical guide, 17 Nov 2008
By R. H. Minchin "Bol" (Yarmouth, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Although the book has some useful practical guidance for those wishing to go cruising, it is a slim book which limits the depth that any particular area can be discussed. I think their are much better books available which give a better in depth guide to cruising. However, their are some good areas of the book and the lists in the appendices are a great starting point for planning your escape to sea.
The book also feels a little dated as it makes no mention of GPS or email and communication via computers etc. It was obviously written in the time of Decca and Loran.
