Product Description

Synopsis

Traditional Christian belief, firmly based on the divinity of Jesus, is now being challenged, by the discoveries of modern science and the research of biblical scholars. In this interpretation of the life of Jesus, Dr Schonfield argues that Jesus's belief that he was the Messiah meant everything to him, and that, master of his destiny, he directed his life and deliberately plotted his actions, which were to culminate in his crucifixion and resurrection, in order to fulfil the Messianic prophecies Dr Schonfield was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1959, and was one of the first scholars to work on the Dead Sea Scrolls.

4.0 out of 5 stars Erudite analysis of Jesus and the Gospels, 24 April 2001
By katyn1940 (London) - See all my reviews
The title of this book is a misnomer. It argues that Jesus stage-managed his life and death, which is not the same as plotting. Anyway, the later Dr Sconfield writes with a sober authority that is missing from most sensationalistic interpretations of Jesus. He stays within the parameters of Jewish Messiahdom and produces the scenario of Jesus zealously and cleverly pursuing his establishment as the longed-for and prophesied Jewish Messiah. Schonfield - a Jew - also highlights - with a certain irreverance - Jewish obsession with the coming Messiah, their special status as God's Chosen People and their belief that the Kingdom of God was their personal des-res. The first half of the book covers the 'passover plot' and actually drags. The second part is better and examines the Gospels, explains Jewish Messiaic beliefs and considers the early days of Christianity. You will need to pay attention, as it all gets very complicated.
