3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected..., 22 Feb 2004
By A Customer
I bought this book thinking that the 'in depth' look at the Fred and Ginger movies that the synopsis mentions meant a wealth of information about the making of the films, the genesis of some of the dance routines and anecdotes from the sets. WRONG! The book reads like a thesis; it is a piece of serious film criticism. This is not necessarily a bad thing - the author seems to have a genuine love of the films and the book is incredibly well researched but he does spend a great deal of time pointing out parallels between the films that I felt were either tenuous or not all that interesting - a couple of examples being his assertion that the films deliberately mimic the syllabification of Fred and Ginger (ie Fred and Honey, Guy and Mimi, Huck and Lizzie, Bake and Sherry - although it breaks down a bit with Jerry and Dale (which heralds a cycle of disintegration apparently)) and his identification of a laughter theme in Swing Time which he links to Freud's 'Civilisations and its Discontents'. If you care about these kinds of details then you will love this book - as well as covering the couple's films together it covers the solo projects up until Fred and Ginger are reunited in the Barkleys of Broadway. The photos (all in B&W) are almost all stills from the films. If, like me, you are after something a little less high-brow to satisfy your interest in the movies and the people who created them then this is not the book for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gallafent is as meticulous a writer as Astaire was dancer, 17 May 2009
By Chris Docker "scottish_big_stick" (Scotland UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Aimed at aficionados, but comprehensively produced to a very high standard, this volume provides a comprehensive context to each of the pair's ten films. Although not a heavy read, it analyses things like comparative plot structure, double meanings, and the implications of dance.

For instance, in Swing Time, Gallafent discusses how the choreography to the melody of The Way You Look Tonight creates a private moment in a public space by using a casual stroll that turns into a dance, and how the dialogue subtly equates dancing beautifully with being in love.

This well-researched, scholarly text is supplemented by black and white reproductions that stand out extremely well on the satin finish paper. A quality volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Study, 3 Feb 2008
The book is an excellent study of the set of Fred and Ginger film musicals and their development.
The copy delivered was in pristine condition.
midtownscholar_uk charged an astounding low cost for the book and its express delivery from the USA to the UK.
Thank you to them and to Amazon.
