4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifull pictures and good overall general information, 11 Jan 2003
The book proves to be a good overall guide, grouping Alp high mountains by regions, and making them easy to mind map.
Many of the pictures make the book worth to have, well shot and breathtaking, captured the escence and peculiarities of each mountain. Yet they are not so good as climbing reference, if one wants to see the routes and decide which one to take. Most are aereal shots, north wands, or ridges.
The description of the routes is quite vague and short, so this book should be complemented with a more descriptive guide, if the purpose is to do some alpine climbing. Yet it provides very interesting information on each mountain, regarding first ascents, curiosities, and most popular routes. It states times and diffciulty levels for each of them.

I believe this is the book one could gift oneself... to start preparing and dreaming about future climbs, and then to go over and over them once back home. It is a window, that opens from home, right into the alps background... certainly displaying the mountains as spectacular as we shall see & remember them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fuel for your alpine dreams, 22 Jun 2003
This book comes in a large format filled with beautiful images of the 4000 meter peaks of The Alps. The material is logically divided into geographical regions and each peak is described in a separate section covering location, history and main routes. However, this book is not a climbing guide and even though the routes are listed with climbing grades there are no route finding details. Instead this book, being a photo book more than anything else, will really excite your dreams when at home planning you next alpine climb.

For me the most important part of the book is the images, but if you read the text you will get a good introduction to the high ranges of The Alps.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Alps book, 21 Aug 2008
By Ski-Niko (NY, NY) - See all my reviews
The pictures alone are worth the money. I'm an avid skier, not a hiker as this book outlays many different hiking routes. Upon my return from Zermatt, I wanted a reference book on all the high peaks there. Having seen most of these mountains, they are truly some of the most beautiful peaks in the world. While you plan your next trip to the Alps, do yourself a favor and buy this book.
