"Camouflage and Art" was inspired by the discovery that so many designers in wartime camouflage had been alumni of the Royal College of Art. Basing the research for her book on Ministry of Defence records, Royal College of Art archives and help from the families of wartime 'camoufleurs', Henrietta Goodden explores the development of the extraordinary ideas which were to play such an important part in defeating the enemy in the air, on land and at sea. Among the names in wartime camouflage to become famous in other walks of life were Basil Spence, architect, Oliver Messel, designer, Edward Seago, painter and Hugh Casson, architect, later to become President of the Royal Academy of Arts.

As Tim Newark writes in Military Illustrated " A fabulous book this, charting the history of camouflage in Britain in World War 2. The author is the daughter of the architect and designer Robert Goodden who served in the Naval Camouflage Unit during the war. She is herself a tutor in fashion at the Royal College of Art and her excellent research uncovers many of the links between designers and tutors from the Royal College of Art who also served in camouflage units throughout the war, disguising civil and military installations. This book examines each aspect of wartime British camouflage in turn, including training, then Civil, RAF, Admiralty, and Desert War camouflage as well as its culmination in operations Overlord and Bodyguard, The text is enriched by many fascinating illustrations...showing the camouflage in action.

I bought this book in the hope to learn a lot about camouflage. But the book is all about who has been who and where and when! The principles of camouflage are not treated in a systematic way; there are remarks and paragraphs, yes, spread over the text. The first aim has been to write a history of the cooperation of the artists to the diverse programs of the diverse departments of the army. Almost no pictures of camouflaged objects!
