Product Description

The Times 1985

"a delightful guide to the scribblers of Sussex".

Book Description

Playwright Christopher Fry says in the foreword: "The pages of this book give us the sign-posts we need and the essence of the lives of those men and women we may seek out....what better guide in Sussex than Bernard Smith? The wide county from east to west has been given a fresh reason for us to explore, to visit those places so splendidly caught by the camera of Peter Haas."

This is an excellent guide to one of Britain's most beautiful counties. The authors have discovered forty writers who lived in Sussex, inlcuding some surprising ones such as Stephen Crane and WB Yeats. The text is full of fascinating local details, such as John Cowper Powys recalling Brighton sea front with its "smells of seaweed and fish and tar and sweat and sandwiches and rope and paint and cheap perfumes and foam-drenched petticoats and bilge-water and beer."

There are maps and directions, but for arm-chair tourists there are also evocative photos of each house, taken specially for the book. It's a really original idea for a guide book and a valuable piece of local history. I read it a few years ago and I'm delighted to see it's still in print. I strongly recommend it.
