Autobiography of man who mapped land ownership in Scotland, 24 Feb 1999
By A Customer
John Mcewen is best known for his pioneering work on the land ownership question in Scotland, "Who Owns Scotland", published in 1977. McEwen who lived to be 105, spent his whole life in forestry, working prior to WW1, and then with the Forestry Commission, on various Scottish estates, and finally, as a consultant. In his retirement he took up the whole question of landownership in Scotland by a few hundred people. He was a Socialist with very forthright views, and not afraid of expressing them. The book is based on recordings made by Doris Hatvany in 1984, and is a fascinating glimpse of life throughout the 20th century. In view of the current high profile debate on Scottish landownership, this book makes an important contribution to the understanding of the whole topic.
