After studying Greek for three years I can recommend this book above all others, although it concentrates on the grammatical aspect of the language as opposed to 'phrases' it is an excellent choice for both the beginner and the more experienced student. Each chapter is a natural progression from the last and can be used as a self contained excercise, and it is much more useable than other books which drift from one subject to another.

I found this book very user friendly and its layout very logical.
Each chapter covers defined tasks with the answers also provided.
The accompanying audio tape is also a god send, helping with the accent and pronounciation.
I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone wanting to teach themselves Greek or planning a holiday to a Greek speaking country.

I used this book on a beginners Greek course. It has detailed grammar but is also organised in chapters of topics eg asking directions, telling the time etc. I found it fairly overwhelming and the chapters didn't seem to follow a progressive course eg verbs were not looked at in detail until later in the book and suddenly you looked at all the tenses in rapid succession. There are also a few printing errors.

I have persisted and find it useful for reference to back up other lessons and plan to go on for exams. It is not suitable if you just want to learn basic conversation on holiday, but if you really want to learn the language it is designed to lead to GCSE.
