5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful insight into Moeran and the 1940's, 1 Sep 2000

Lionel Hill first heard music by Moeran while in hospital in 1943. A short letter to the composer elicited a response a week later, and thus began a friendship that lasted until Moeran's death in 1950.

Fortunately for us, this relationship was conducted by letter as well as in person, and Lionel was a perceptive and enthusiastic music lover. Clearly he and Moeran hit it off well, and this book brings to life both Moeran and a lost age. We are carried through the struggles with record companies, the triumphs of new works, the marriage to Peers Coetmore, and the places and landscapes which help inspire Moeran's composition. It's a book that can be read time and again, on a number of levels, and is the perfect partner to Geoffrey Self's "The Music of E J Moeran" - whereas the latter contains far more musical analysis, this book brings you closer to the man.

An appendix details the letters Moeran sent to his wife, adding further insights - it's a book no Moeran lover should be without.
