Essential for all serious collectors of poole pottery, 20 Mar 2002
This book provides a comprehensive overview of the Poole pottery - the people, the designs and the sheer range of products. Regardless of which period of Poole you're interested in, from the early 1900's all the way through to the 1980's, this book has something to offer. As well as terrific photos (as you can probably gather by now.. I'm rather keen on the book), the text gives interesting background information on the events happening at the pottery - both in terms of designers coming and going and the key influencers in terms of business direction and strategy. The chapter on Marks (factory marks and the makers' & decorators' marks) enables one to date individual pieces. And it would be nice if this chapter was also provided as a separate pamphlet to enable one to use it at fairs when searching out particular Poole items My only real criticism of the book is that it would benefit from a chapter where the pattern and shape numbering was logically arranged. I came to the book through buying a small amount of Poole from the 1930's.. The collection has now grown to such an extent that I've had to resort to putting up shelves specifically for the Poole. And I attach a small amount of blame for this to the book since as a result of reading the book I'm much more interested in Poole than I was before. All in all, an essential book for anyone interested in Poole Pottery. Highly recommended
