The canonical 'Time Out' review book; mixing the house wit with arty photos, the book tries to cover London's huge range of restaurants as best it can. You may not like their jokes, but they know far more about London that you do. From kidneys in Smithfields to bagels in Finchley; from early-morning caffs to late-nite kebab spots; from noodles for a pound to celeb haunts costing a ton a head. This is its curse as well as it's calling, Time Out thinks that it is too cool for school and often is a little bit snooty. Of course, you might argue that with all there is to offer in London you have to be cruel to be kind to those who are really doing something special.

They don't neglect the basics of price, location, access and contacts and you could do worse than use this purely as a directory and take no notice of the fickle and hard-to-please reviewers.

My only real complaint is that outer-london doesn't even register. If you live out beyond zone 2, Time out assumes that you spend you evening leaning on a gate chewing a piece of straw and eating turnips for dinner.

Having said that, I did buy it and I do use it. I just don't take it too seriously.
