5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and fascinating read, 10 Jul 2005
By A Customer
Knowing initially very little about Malcolm Arnold, I was delighted at how quickly I became intrigued and fascinated by this extraordinary man and his colourful life. The story is sensitively told and described, with clear respect for the man and his music, and with a very good grasp of significant detail and the bigger picture. The book stands as an undoubtedly authoritative biography but also as a marvellous portrayal of Britain's social history in much of the twentieth century. Most people will find much to treasure and enjoy in this highly-readable volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous read!, 15 Nov 2004
This is the most illuminating and refreshing musical biography of Malcolm Arnold, ever. It not only captures what other biographies have missed (the significance of women in the composer's life and the uncomfortable detail of his mental illness), one senses a survey of the greatest magnitude; reporting a most difficult, extreme life with completeness, sensitivity, balance and integrity. This book clearly connects the 'Rogue' to the 'Genius' in a way that has never been achieved before in composer biography. The real Malcolm is allowed to shine through. There is also fabulous musical detail - neither 'soft-pedalling' nor boring intellectual ramble! Instead we are left with a hugely memorable, emotional read; deep empathy with the man, and inspiration to go out and buy the music.

I note that one reviewer seems to paint the book entirely negatively; indeed making not a single positive point. Did they read the book properly? It is certainly not sordid and dirty, nor is it a little book! To suggest that the book is a sloppy piece of research is most revealing - how can the reviewer know this without considerable knowledge of the composers? Does Mr. Weems have an axe to grind? Malcolm himself was frequently dogged by poor reviews and this kind of 'received' spin. By contrast 'Rogue Genius' is an immensely significant contribution that will ultimately serve to bring Malcolm's music to true recognition, now long overdue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid read, 21 Nov 2004
By A Customer
This is without doubt one of the best books I have read. Its detailed, scholarly approach is admirable, but above all it remains a captivating and thoroughly enjoyable read. For fans of Malcolm Arnold it is an absolute must. Very good too for anyone with an interest in British Music.

10/10

1.0 out of 5 stars A disgraceful book!
