Product Description

Product Description

The vast wardrobe of Queen Elizabeth I is legendary: in her own time some of the richly embroidered gowns were displayed with other treasures to dazzle the eyes of foreign visitors to the Tower of London. The quantity of clothes recorded in the inventories taken in 1600 would seem to suggest sheer vanity, but a survey of work carried out in the Wardrobe of Robes throughout the reign reveals a different picture. It is one of careful organization and economy. This work on the wardrobe of Queen Elizabeth I is illustrated with photographs of portraits, minatures, tomb sculptures, engravings, woven textiles and embroiders. Two indexes are provided: the first of paintings, persons, places and events; the second offering information on fashionable dress and accessories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, marvelous resource!, 19 Oct 2000
By gryhare@usa.net (Tennessee, USA) - See all my reviews
I just received my copy of this book today, and cannot recommend it enough. The level of research and detail Ms. Arnold has provided in this work is well worth both the price and wait. It is truely the definitive work on the clothing and fashion of Elizabeth I and her era.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best investments I've ever made., 20 Mar 2007

(REAL NAME)
This seems to be an expensive book and I've been reluctant to bite the bullet and buy it unseen. Why did I hesitate? The work of Janet Arnold is well-known to me and this book has to be the culmination of all her excellent research and painstaking recording of historical costume.

For those interested in the re-creation of costume; in the history of the manufacture of dress; in embroidery; in the politics and social history of fashion; in the Tudor period; in the life and times of Elizabeth 1st, - the list of potential delighted readers is endless. The interesting text relating not only to the garments and accessories worn by the Queen but also to the craftsmen who designed and manufactured the items is all supported by convincing and fascinating evidence and illustrations. A detailed inventory of the Queens wardrobe created in 1660 transcribed by Janet for our amazement completes the book.

I have a large collection of books relating to the history of dress. This book contains much information and detail I have not found elsewhere, including other excellent books by the same author such as 'Patterns Of Fashion'. (If you aren't aware of this series of books, check them out ,especially if you interested in costume-making to replica standard).

An absolute marvel and a fitting tribute to Janet Arnold; who has to rank as one of the finest costume and fashion historians to date. If you are thinking of buying this book - don't wait any longer -do it now!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Elizabethan Costuming "Bible" - outstanding, 6 Jan 2000
By mellissa_lowe@hotmail.com (Brisbane, Australia) - See all my reviews
This is a wonderful work, with many illustrations and detailed analysis of every aspect of the garments discussed. For anyone wishing to re-create an Elizabethan garment - read this first to understand how it all worked - well worth the price and the wait!

It was a dreadful loss when Janet Arnold died however her work in this book and others will ensure she is never forgotten!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for the Elisabethan Costumer...
Janet Arnold is the goddess of English Costume. This book contains all of the little details that separate authentic clothing recreation from just a costume.
