I once saw the quirky British movie Clockwork Mice that stars Ian Hart as an idealistic new teacher at a school for difficult boys. He tries to help them connect with the world through poetry and sports. The movie features the Charles Hamilton Sorley poem The Song of the Ungirt Runners.

I had not heard of Sorley really. I found he was one of the poets killed in the First World War, regarded by some as the greatest loss.
His voice seemed so modern I was surprised to find he had died almost a hunderd years ago.

That great poem with its unforgettable last lines:

'And we run because we like it
Through the broad bright land'

made me want to read more though.

Except in First World War collections he's not that readily available, but he really deserves a volume of his own and this is a good collection of his work.

His style is not overly complicated but the subtlety and rhythm of his work is beautiful. I highly recommend him.
