Product Description

The Crime Writers' Association judging panel
"A definitive account of the notorious murder of a Victorian policeman. Extensively researched and well written".

Book Description
THE WINNER OF THE CRIME WRITERS' ASSOCIATION GOLD DAGGER AWARD 2006, and COMMENDED IN THE ALAN BALL LOCAL HISTORY AWARDS 2006.

In June 1846, 20 year old Dagenham police constable George Clark was brutally murdered while on night duty. This lavishly-illustrated book is the first full-length study of a killing that shocked the nation but was to remain unsolved. Many suspects and motives have been put forward, with one theory even implicating Clark's own police colleagues.

The authors were all born and bred in the Dagenham area, and have used original sources to uncover new facts and insights into this fascinating case. The action ranges from rural Essex to London's prisons and convict hulks, from the wilds of British Columbia to the Australian goldfields.

Along the way we meet a cross-section of the early Victorian community, from the monarch herself down to the wretched victims of the 'Hungry 40s'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, 21 Aug 2007

Having just read the book I can thoroughly recommend it. It gives an intriguing insight into not only the murder of PC Clark but life around Dagenham and the law and penal system during the mid 1800s. There are numerous photographs from bygone days and copious references to other sources of information if you want to research further. All in all it's a excellent book for those with an interest in local history and amateur sleuths alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Whodunnit !!!, 20 April 2009

This book is not only a wonderful story of a real life crime and tremendously well researched, it just happens to be an extremely good book for anyone who fancies themselves as an amateur detective. I'm not sure if Miss Marples could have solved this mystery.!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book, 16 April 2009
The amount of research in this book is incredible. I used to live in the area and first heard about this case from my mate Cliff O'Dornty, who worked on the bins for the Council and knew how much work had gone into writing it. It's all here - drama, mystery, suspects galore, history, and make up your own mind. The writers deserved to win that big prize for this book.
