3.0 out of 5 stars Ok intro to ice climbing, not so good for mixed climbing, 11 Nov 2004

Obviously the best way to learn to climb is to actually go and climb. When I read a climbing book I am looking for new ideas that I can try when I manage to get away from the SE of England (which is flat and rarely icy) to somewhere more interesting (with hills and ice).

I thought this book was quite good at explaining the basics (basic ice climbing, ice protection, belaying), but when it came to intermediate topics (such as mixed climbing) it was less useful. For this reason I was less happy with this book because I was hoping to learn some some new techniques for mixed routes.

On the plus side the writing style is enjoyable, making for an interesting easy read.

If you can find a copy in your local library, or you can get it at a bargain price it is well worth reading. If you are looking for a first book on ice climbing (even with the good introductionary section in this book) I would suggest "Freedom of the Hills".
