5.0 out of 5 stars A thorough introduction to avalanche theory., 21 Nov 1998
By A Customer
For backcountry enthusiasts with a science background, this book provides a thorough introduction to avalanche theory. The book is divided into chapters which build a solid foundation (weather systems, snow structure) through snowpack basics (snow strength and deformation, snowpack structure) and well into more advanced concepts (snowpack analysis, avalanche prediction, search and rescue, and even control with explosives, etc.) It is an excellent, if heavy, read and I found it a valuable resource in the development of an intro avalanche course.

5.0 out of 5 stars AKA. The 'magnum opus' of avalanche books, 4 Mar 2009
This review is from: The Avalanche Handbook (Paperback)
Gives the complete avalanche story. A thorough, detailed tome that makes more sense once you've read other avalanche books. It fills in the little but important details that lesser volumes mention in passing. Critical reading for all avalanche professionals in the English-speaking world; this is the one that you have to read before embarking on hard-edged vocational avalanche qualifications. There are more accessible books on avalanches but none as complete. Definitely a book you study rather than read; a bit 'chewy' at times, so caveat emptor. Highly recommended.
