Shorter is better, says Theodore A. Rees Cheney, and proves it. The book is divided into three parts: Revision by Reduction, Rethink and rearrange, and Revise by rewording. - First, write. Then, look for chapters, sections and paragraphs that can be deleted. After that, sentences and words. In the end, try shorter words. Go through your text again. Look for ways of making the text flow more smoothly. Give special thought to the beginnings and endings. The latter stick in the mind of the reader... And so on. Cheney makes it clear that he writes for writers who care about their readers. «The reader-centred writer knows that revision of subsequent drafts is as creative and enjoyable as writing the first draft.» A thorough reader will be inspired to working towards the aim of the title. Cheney has attained his own promise: He does get the words right.
