Have you ever wondered what the Pope has against certain theologians? Or why some Catholics think that the Pope stands in the way of the Church's renewal? Have you ever thought that the articles about the Church in secular newspapers are missing the point? The answer set out here is that in the effort to engage with society outside the Church certain theologians, the Modernists, have been insufficiently critical of modern ideas and taken up much that they should have rejected.

Turmoil and Truth sets out the history of the debate, showing that it goes back to the 18th century, developed in the 19th, seemed to disappear in the first half of the 20th, to reappear at the Second Vatican Council.

The author has a clear style and skilfully pitches the technical content at the reader who is educated, but not in theology or philosophy. He explains the labels which, in the secular press, confuse the debate, and presents a lucid account of the Church's struggle to preserve and present the truth.

Best of all is that even those who disagree with the author will understand better the issues involved.
