There has been an inevitable rush of books about Joseph Ratzinger since he was elected Pope, but there is probably no better place to start reading about the man than with his autobiography. It covers his life up to his appointment as Archbishop of Munich and Freising. Ratzinger is a gifted writer and though there are times when you suspect the translation from the German doesn't do him total justice, this is a fascinating account of his life. The warmth he feels to his parents and the very Catholic society in which he grew-up is very evident, but so is the lurking spectre of the rise of Nazism and the war. His family's loathing of the Nazis is clear and this is also an interesting account of young man forced to serve, albeit briefly, in the labour service and then the army of a state he despised. It also provides a snap-shot of the difficulties of life in the immediate post-war period, when Germany lay in ruins. The most remarkable thing, however, is Ratzinger's candour. He writes openly about the trials of getting his academic thesis accepted and of various personal, political and other challenges. His commitment to theology means that parts of the book are an explanation of the prevailing philosophical and theological debates of the time, but it is no less readable for that. It's a short book, but he packs a lot in !
