1.0 out of 5 stars NOT a bike book for EVERYBODY, 16 Feb 2004
By Ms M R Simmonds (Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I really hoped that this book would be of great help, conisdering all the great reviews. However, though I am very good at doing fiddly mechanical stuff usually, I can only follow instructions. Sadly, this book had plenty of information, but as far as diagrams go, it is incomplete, and repeatedly instructs you to carry out various procedures without labelling all the parts mentioned. Furthermore, it often asks you to refer to diagrams many pages on in the book from the written instructions - really not helpful when your hands are full trying to grip various parts of a bike and tools. I now give up and will put my bike in for service in a rip-off bike shop. Overall, very unclear, and essentially useless. Possible ok if you have someone to show you how to do everything. NOT a bike book for EVERYBODY.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed, 20 May 2003
I have limited mechanical experience and, faced with a family of 5 bikes, I wanted a book to help me to the maintenance. As soon as I took received this book, Iit helped me to solve an annoying problem that had been causing frustration, and has givenb me confidence to overhaul some slipping derailers.

Well worth the price ,for its practicality and relavence.

5.0 out of 5 stars If I can do it…, 3 Mar 2004
Honestly, there's no one on the planet less technically gifted than me. But with six bikes in the household, I can't keep running to the bike shop every time I discover a loose dust cap. So I searched for a bike maintenance book for idiots and took a punt on this one.
Wise move! Without it, I'd have been totally stumped by a rear brake caliper problem on my racing bike, so it's already paid for itself and more. Yes, there are a lot of Americanisms in there, but I think they suit the laconic, faintly irreverent writing style.
It's a compact paperback, too, so you can stuff it in your rucksack when you go out on the bike for the day.
If you're hopeless at fixing things but at least want to give it a try, this won't disappoint.
