Product Description

Product Description

Losing a pregnancy or newborn is a grievous experience. Today the perinatal death rate in the US - which refers to foetuses 20 weeks old through babies 4 weeks old - is about 14 per 1,000 births. Many more children die earlier in pregnancy than later in childhood. In "Parenthood Lost", Dr Michael Berman shares his insights from his experiences helping parents deal with their grief and unravels the confusing genetic and medical causes of miscarriage, stillbirth and infant death. Through original poetry, firsthand stories told by parents, and articles describing genetic and medical disorders, "Parenthood Lost" offers clarification and hope for parents who have suffered this tragedy. Dr Berman includes a section on the most common reasons for perinatal losses, with detailed medical information written by practising obstetricians and a glossary of terms.

5.0 out of 5 stars an emotional and factual book that heals the soul, 27 Jul 2001
By A Customer
From the first page I sobbed all the way through this book. It was a cathartic experience just knowing that I am not alone in my grief at losing my daughter a year ago. Dr Berman is truly a talented man and his compassion comes through in his poetry. I marvel at how this man can touch at the rawness of a broken heart of a mother and in that same way bring healing. By reading other people's experiences combined with factual medical knowledge gave me the insight on my own problems and the courage to question the medical profession until I got answers to my questions surrounding my daughters death. Just by reading this book I feel as if a ytremendous weight has been lifted from my shoulders and I would recommend it to anyone not just to those who have lost children but to the wider circle of people around those who have lost their parenthood as it gives insight into how the parents feel and perhaps in some small way they can be part of their healing process.
