Product Description

Review

"Clearly the most important book on childbirth available today, Silent Knife should be read by everyone connected with childbirth, consumers and professionals. No other book on the market today offers the complete help to cesarean prevention, including VBAC information and support. . . . One of those few books that has the power to change a person's life."-Justine Clegg, Council for Cesarean Awareness

5.0 out of 5 stars Factual, research-based, entertaining guide about VBAC, 19 May 2000
By Mrs. S. Covington "Kcovington" (Nottingham) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I found this book excellent and enjoyed reading it. A sensitive subject, handled responsibly, thoroughly, and with appropriate humour. All aspects of modern technological birth are described, along with references to published research and lots of figures to back up points made. Subjects include enemas and shaving, episiotomy, fetal monitoring, admission procedures, and so on, in the context of birth in the modern age. It is obviously for people who want to avoid mechanical intervention in childbirth, and is strongly pro- a natural type of birth. It fills a yawning gap for the many women who have had cesarians or other unwanted interventions at previous births, and struggled to come to terms with what happened. Personal feelings are dealt with over several chapters, including father's points of view throughout. The history of developments in modern obstetrics are covered in enough detail to provide context, and to explain the sociological aspects of these developments. Only downside is that it relates to the American situation, where independent midwives are prohibited from practising outside of a hospital setting in many states. Hence, it is written for women who have no choice but to face a hospital birth. Here in the UK, you can (legally) give birth wherever you choose, and also book an independent midwife and avoid almost all intervention. This is obviously not the case in the States, and the book does not describe these options. Ought to be a set book for all nurses, doctors, midwives and people who run childbirth classes. Read with an open mind, there is much food for thought here.

I recommend this for any woman searching for an intervention free pregnancy and birth, a non-interventionist doctor or the best chance of success with a VBAC or first birth. Very enlightening.--Nichole H.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not one I'd recommend as a factual unbiased guide, 23 Jan 1998
By A Customer
I am facing this choice and was looking for some good factual information that would help me make that decision and be comfortable with it. This book comes across like some earth-mother, new age diatribe. I kept looking for the useful information and never found it.
