The basics of sai anatomy, history, and technique are presented in this critically acclaimed vintage text that demonstrates a variety of warm-up, gripping, handling, flipping, striking, blocking, and sparring techniques - as well as footwork, stances, and combinations - through detailed photographic sequences and illustrations. 5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST SAI BOOK AVAILABLE, 11 Dec 2001
By A Customer
This book is an essential title for any kobudo library. While the sai tends to be one of the more neglected weapons of karate, the content of this book is of extremely high quality, containing info on the history and maintenance of the sai as well as basics, combination and sparring techniques. Initial skills are easily picked up with clear photography companied by a simple commentary, while still providing enough material to keep challenging the learner for years.Demura's instruction makes the sai highly accessible for any experinced karateka; it is a pity that there are no other books of such high quality in publication.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginners' guide, 1 Dec 2003
By Richard Marsh "Midnight" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book starts at the beginning and teaches you all of the basics you will need to use sai effectively. Although a little reliant on formal stances and moves á la karate, combined with your own original ideas and training this book can be a powerful step towards mastering karate's neglected weapon.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive sai book available, 22 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This is an excellent book for those who are just starting their training with the sai. It offers everything from the history of the weapon to its application in combat. The book is easy to follow, including good quality photographs of Fumio Demura. It would have been nice to see full katas, but the basic routines are certainly suitable for beginners. In short, whether you want a book to support sai training in a school, or you simply want to learn the basics on your own, this is the book to choose
