Product Description

Product Description

Although some aspects of pre-Roman and pre-Christian beliefs remain shrouded in mystery, the author of this comprehensive, profusely illustrated volume contends that neither the Roman invasion of Britain nor the coming of Christianity eliminated pagan religious practice. Dr Anne Ross, who speaks Gaelic and Welsh, writes from wide experience of living in Celtic speaking communities where she has traced vernacular tradition. She employs archaeological and anthropological evidence, as well as folklore, to provide broad insight into the early Celtic world. She begins by examining Celtic places of worship, the shrines and sanctuaries in which sacred objects were housed and from where they could be ritually displayed with various rites and sacrifices were conducted before the people. Dr Anne Ross describes the divine warriors with their aquatic, therapeutic and fertility connection. Dr Anne Ross is truly gripping as she leads the reader through her evidence from ritual pits and cult sites, votive wells, sacred precincts and monuments. This is a brilliant piece of historical and archaeological reconstruction.

4.0 out of 5 stars Recommended reading!, 15 May 1999

Originally published in 1967, Pagan Celtic Britain is one of the most important studies on the subject, despite the tendancy in some circles of viewing the work as out-dated. Ross herself says that her work is limited by the scarse material, iconographical and vernacular, from which this literary reconstruction is drawn. Despite this, I think that Ross provides an accurate insight into the pre-Roman and pre-Christian beliefs and religious practises that existed in the north of this country.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating read, 22 Jan 2009

Personally, I think many more Neo-pagans should read this book. This is a book which look at Archaeoligical and linguistic evidence - hard facts of what we know about pagan Britain. It lists the various cults that may have exist in Britain and their characteristics. For example, detailed evidence for a Horned god cult, Warrior cults, Goddess Raven cults etc etc. The book is written in a clear cut style and is quite harsh on other modern non-archaeologist interpreters (rightly so!).

I personally found it fasincating as it listed many ancient Godforms which typically arent bandied around as buzz words in modern Neo-pagan trash books.

A scholarly book written by a true scholar, highly recommended.
