I have not read the translation, but in Russian this book is hilarious and certain scenes and punchlines are unforgettable. People who have experienced drunkennes in North-East Europe are likely to recognise the characters and situations with fondness and/or cringing!. Bush is not to be missed - a German/Estonian/Soviet reporter/drunkard who is the catalyst for events and dialogue that reflect a special time and place. The book is first and foremost great fun and easy to read but also has depth when put in its historical context.

Living as a Russian journalist in Soviet Estonia, Dovlatov captures the cynicism, emptiness, irony, isolation, careerism, and dissonance of late Soviet communism. It is a work of powerful literary force and profound human awareness.
