As newbies to having a veg plot in London, we bought 4 gardening books - from trendy urban gardening to the most basic of 'all you need to know about' type guides, but I can honestly say that since we picked this one up we've barely turned a page of the others.

Growing veg is a scarey experience at first, some books make it sound so hard that you think it'd be a miracle if anything comes up at all, but Hamilton's guide gives you all the info and advice you'll need while drawing on some valuable and well-learned experience, making it all feel achievable and fascinating.

If you're buying this then you care about what goes on your plants and into your food. Hamilton is honest about the fact that when it comes to alternatives to nasty chemicals and pesticides, it may not be that he, or anyone, has all the answers, but he takes you through what he's learnt and encourages you to find your own creative solutions. His honesty and genuine passion really make you want to fight for your little patch, learning more year after year.

Geoff rocks. If you don't love this book I'll eat my gardening gloves.
