Very Short, Very Informative - EXCELLENT PRIMER, 27 Jul 2002
The first thing to note about this book is that it is very short and very quick to read - it only took me 45mins from start to finish. However, having said that, the book gets straight to the point and once you've finished reading it, you actually feel as though you pretty much know what you need to know about creatine if you are thinking about supplementing it in your diet. This fact probably owes itself to the style in which the book is written - five clearly defined chapters with a list of questions accompanied by an answer; 1) what creatine is; 2) how creatine works; 3) how much creatine to supplement in your diet depending upon the type of person; 4) creatine specific to sports; 5) possible side-effects surrounding creatine supplementation. The fact that the last chapter even exists gives you an indication as to the motives of the authors in writing this book. They are simply presenting the FACTS (with loads of references made to research that has been conducted) - this book is NOT just another HYPE story. For instance - the authors recommend that you cycle your use of creatine and not take it continuously without break as there may be possible side effects resulting from long-term usage. This is just to be on the safe-side as research into long-term creatine supplementation has not really been done yet. Read the back of any creatine supplement pack and you will not see that in print. Another thing that surprised me was that creatine isn't just a supplement for athletes. Everyone can benefit from its supplementation (even the elderly). I myself am an amateur bodybuilder, and have been considering creatine supplementation for some time. I decided it was wise to do some research into creatine first, rather than just taking it because 'everyone' else does and because I've heard from people how great it is - I wanted the truth rather than hype (huge deal in the supplement industry) mixed with half-truths. I now feel as though I know the real story about creatine and not just the hype. As a result, I am now in a position to safely supplement it. If you too are considering supplementing creatine, for whatever reason, I definitely recommend that you read this book as an excellent primer first. My interest in the subject has certainly been sparked, and I now think that I will go and read into the subject of sports supplementation some more (a good place to |
