i recently re-read this title - which is the first of the Luis Mendoza series - and enjoyed it just as much as I did when I first read it many many years ago. This introduces us to Lt Mendoza and his colleagues in the Los Angeles police force of the late 50s / early 60s - brilliant - you really care for the characters - his future wife , his friends and associates. Not being American I was rather surprised at the prejudice Mendoza faces from certain elements of the "anglo" society of the time. I was not so aware of it back when I first read the book.
