2.0 out of 5 stars Below par, but still worth a read !, 1 May 2002
This review is from: Saint on Guard (Paperback)
For those unused to Charteris or the phenomenon of "The Saint", it is an unexpected pleasure to pick up a book written so long ago (1945) and find it so readable.
There are two stoies here: "The Black Market" and "The Sizzling Saboteur", both based in wartime America.
Although very occasional parts of the writing do appear slightly dated, the plots and characterisations are sophisticated yet not belaboured. There are very very funny moments, and points of real suspense. Charteris must be one of the most under-estimated authors : some of the "Saint" books are absolute classics (such as "The Saint's Getaway" and "The Saint and Scotland Yard"), and Charteris never repeats a plot-line.
Whilst this isn't up on the level of those other books mentioned, this is certainly worth the read.
