4.0 out of 5 stars Just overlook the story, that's all..., 8 May 1999
By A Customer
Honestly, after the very first book of the series [Sword-Dancer] which had a refreshingly unimposing story to it, most of the Tiger and Del novels have had highly artificial, overdone plots involving all kinds of inappropriate forces. There, it's said. That would usually make for a pretty average series if not for the main characters, Tiger and Del. Not to mention Tiger being a very enjoyable narrator, the two always seem to be extremely real people, moreso than most any characters I've seen in a novel, and their relationship is terribly entertaining. Moreover, the fifth book in the series adds a new 'central' character, Prima, who indulges in the Sword- series' best activity: having long chats with Tiger on life in general. Great reading, though I very strongly suggest reading the first four books before this one. On the downside, the stud is rather absent in this one, which sucks. [err.. he's a horse, mind you.]

1.0 out of 5 stars Not like the others., 6 May 1999
By A Customer
I read and really enjoyed the first Tiger and Del books years ago. The characters were really interesting - including the "bad guys." The story moved quickly and almost always captured my attention and imagination. I couldn't wait to see what would happen next.

Unfortunately, the _Sword-Born_ has little or none of the above. The most unique and threatening character, Nihko, turned out to be rather boring. I found that after a while I didn't even care whether or not I found out his secrets. I kept waiting for something to really happen, but most of the plot (as with the characters and places) seemed insignificant, at best.

I don't know why, but there seems to be a more recent trend among good fantasy writers of getting into bizarre/sick violence. And when it happens to one of the main characters, it sort of ruins everything - especially when it's the climax of the whole story. I can't express my disappointment adequately without getting into specifics, which, of course, I can't in this review.

Jennifer Roberson is a very talented writer and I usually love her works, but I cannot recommend this book to anyone.

This is the first bk of the series that i've read. it could've been funnier, but it was funny enough. I enjoyed the mage's point of view. More entertaining than others. Del be weird. I can't wait to see what happens to Tiger. There better be a next one. Maybe I'll rd the previous ones. Maybe.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment
Most of the book is summary. There is very little action, and what there is of it is either mildly unbelievable or just generally absurd. Read more
