Product Description

Product Description
This guide is a source of information and insights into petrochemical reactions and products, process technology and polymer synthesis. It reviews and discusses the reactions and processes involved in transforming petroleum-based hydrocarbons into the myriad chemicals that form the basis of the multi-million-dollar petrochemical industry. The feature of this text is that it goes beyond just discussing the chemical reactions involved in converting petroleum products into chemicals, and relates these reactions to the different process variables and catalysts used to produce specific polymers and chemicals. Following a systematic approach, the book first reviews the composition and processing of raw materials - natural gas and crude oil - to obtain reactive intermediates. It discusses catalytic cracking, catalytic reforming and steam cracking of petroleum fractions as the key processes for producing olefins and aromatics. Next, the book describes the various routes for producing synthesis gas and its derivatives such as ammonia, methanol and oxo alcohols. Then, in a sequence based on the reactivates of the intermediates, the text addresses chemicals based on paraffins, olefins, diolefins and aromatics. Finally, the last two chapters review the synthesis of polymers and characterization and production of plastics, elastomers and synthetic fibers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy reference with wealth of primary & secondary reactions, 25 Jul 2005
By A Customer
Reasonably comprehensive selection of industrial reaction pathways from typical hydrocarbon sources in an easy to follow order. Features details of selected processes, and includes purification processes as well. Page layouts are not always to presentation standard.
