3.0 out of 5 stars Basic guide to Strategic Planning - covers the ground well., 30 Mar 2009
The Applied Strategic Planning approach helps Organizations identify their ideal future and how to get there. As the title suggests it is only an introduction.

The authors claim to be different in some respects to other approaches. The book does not however go far enough to give you all you need, to plan effectively for the future. One drawback for example is the lack of really convincing case studies.

The material is a bit thin on the capabilities needed for effective decision making. Change management needs more coverage, to make the book more useful. Most importantly the book does not pick up, on the many recent excellent books on effective Strategy implementation. (See my other reviews.)

One of the books strengths is the section on organizational culture and its impact on Strategy. The message is ignore this and you are less likely to succeed. For more depth on this if you have the time see:

Schein E.H. (2005) - Organizational Culture and Leadership. San Francisco - Jossey Bass.

Summary - useful coverage, for something more dynamic/inspirational see:

60 Minute Strategic plan. By John E Johnson and Anne Marie Smith Pub 2007.

This is not as superficial as it sounds and is highly focussed and pragmatic in content.

Stan Felstead. - Interchange Resources - UK.
