Product Description

From the Author

This is a universal tale of love, family and survival.
Writing this book was a cathartic experience for me. Many times while writing my story, I would start laughing out loud. Many other times my keyboard would be all wet with tears. But I just couldn't stop writing. The death of my beloved sister, Josée, in 1993 pushed me to write this book. We had shared so many extraordinary experiences that nobody else knew about; I wanted our children to understand and remember what we had gone through.

"By the Grace of God" is the story of my life. It is a story that, I think, will move you to tears AND uplift your spirit. I think you will be fascinated to learn about what life is really like in Central Africa. You will be amazed to see how many similarities there are between family life in Africa and family life in America. At the same time, you'll be intrigued by the differences in culture and beliefs.

"By the Grace of God" is, indeed, a story about war, oppression, and disease in Africa. But it is much more than that. It is a universal tale of love and family. I hope you have the opportunity to get to know my family by reading "By the Grace of God" and to feel the love that made it possible for us to survive.

5.0 out of 5 stars ...a truly excellent real-life story of tragedy and love., 13 May 1999
By A Customer
Possibly one of the only books that I have ever read that has brought about so many different emotions at once. Each chapter of this story of survival, pain, war, and the love of a family brings about a new feeling either pulling you to the edge with suspense, making you laugh out loud, or making you sob (which I can honeslty say that no book has ever made me cry!). Suruba Georgette Wechsler is a master at capturing and describing the events of her childhood through the wars and revolutions that have battered the Congo and especially her home province of Kongolo. Throughout the beginning of the story, she vividly portrays the horror that she as a very young girl experienced with her family -- fleeing murderous troops, dodging bullets, seeing masses of dead bodies, hiking through the brutal African wilderness with little or no food, and dealing with a dysfunctional family. After overcoming many major losses in this time period, she went forth to obtain the best education offered in the are and went off to work in the UN in the United States, eventually marrying an American man, having children of her own, and taking in the children of her late beloved sister, Josee, who succumbed to AIDS. There is little known of the problems that the Congo has had to face, especially in Mrs. Wechsler's home, the Kongolo region. The story has truly opened my eyes, and hopefully others', to the atrocities that occured there and to the cruel tactics of control used by the Mobutu regime when the nation became Zaire. Mrs. Wechsler truly captivates her audience through her brilliant means of painting a picture of her life and the hardships she has had to overcome.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book. It is truly touching., 7 May 1999
By A Customer
The amazing things that the author went through throughout her life were very uplifting. I laughed and cried throughout. The author's experiences were vividly captured on the pages of the book. I was caught up in the horrific imagery of the war that was described, but also the beauty of her family relationships as well as her love for her country of birth. I recommed this book highly, but be prepared for an emotional roller coaster.
