4.0 out of 5 stars A classic that still holds up, 5 Jan 2005
By A Customer
It is old fashioned, yes, but readable and ultimately, still magical. If your child thinks no book is any good unless it's been made into a movie with CGI effects replacing plot then they won't like this. If on the other hand they still have a love of real magic in a story, then it's worth spending what is really a tiny amount for this classic story.

If you're still not sure then you might prefer to introduce them to this author (George MacDonald) with his less unusual stories, The Princess and Curdie and the Princess and the Goblin first.

5.0 out of 5 stars A magical Adventure., 29 Oct 1998
By A Customer
The book follows the magical adventures of Diamond, the son of a hansom cab driver with his new found friend the North Wind.

It is PETER PAN, MARY POPPINS and ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS all rolled together in a delictable confection.

5.0 out of 5 stars a lost classic of childhood, 7 Jan 2005

I'm just in the middle of reading The Princess and the Goblin to my 9 year old son, and thought I'd check to see if this is in print. It isn't, and should be. Although the language is a little difficult in places, and the ending as poignant as only a Victorian classic can be the same wild, mystical imagination blows through it.
Little Diamond is a coachman's son who gets taken up, quite literally, by the North Wind, a beautiful lady with long streaming hair. Sometimes she is tiny, and sometimes a giantess. She plays quasi-moral games with him during the course of their adventures together, and is very similar to Princess Irenes' great-great grandmother in P&G in being a kind of mysterious goddess. (The illustrations, by the pre-Raphelite artist Arthur Hughes, are glorious). One of the best things about the novel is the fairytale about Little Daylight, a princess who waxes and wanes with the moon. Macdonald was brilliant at these (I also recommend his collectec stories, including The Light Princess.) There is less plot than in his best-known novels, but just as much atmosphere of the strange. It's the kind of book that will haunt you all your life....
