3.0 out of 5 stars Useful plant dictionary but aimed at American gardeners more, 10 Mar 2001
A useful little book, if like me you are interested in gardening with exotic and unusual plants. The Encyclopedia of Plants,in the back is an informative and useful guide. The overwintering section on 'defying winter' was extremely helpful. The only problem is understanding the 'zones' which is the American system to determine different regions and locations.(Incidently the new seed range from Kew Gardens-available from Thomson & Morgan - uses zones and packets feature a map of UK zones)

This book would be a good companion to Will Giles' The New Exotic Garden -(which is a real 'must have')

2.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for American gardeners, 7 Feb 2001
By A Customer
The book catagorizes plants by climate zones and it was clear these related the US market alone. There was no table to show just where the zones were geographically so I was unable to figure out which zone coincided with my latitude. As I was looking for ideas for planting in my S.E. England garden, I found the book very confusing and of little help. The photographs and plant descriptions were very good and, had I been living in the States, the book would have been a joy to have. The star rating reflects the usefulness to the UK gardener.
