4.0 out of 5 stars Better than the first book., 16 Nov 2003
By Ian Tapley "thefragrantwookiee" - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
THE STORY:
The rogue dark elf Drizzt Do'Urden must face life in the deadly Underdark as he flees his vengeful family. On his journey he finds loyal friends who face terrible danger with him shoulder to shoulder (metaphorically; seeing as how one's a gnome and another is a ten foot monster!)

WHAT'S GOOD:
This book is much more enjoyable than the first and Drizzt's character really begins to develop towards the daring hero he will become. Belwar is an excellent companion for Drizzt too, containing elements of Bruenor that make him the perfect counterpoint to the dark elf. I also thought that the resurrection of Zaknafein was a clever idea, providing Drizzt with a nemesis who is truly equal to the task. The side story of Clacker's tragic situation lends the book a sombre tone in places that works well. I also very much liked the character of Jarlaxle, who combines the deviousness of other drow elves with the charisma that makes for a really good anti-hero.

WHAT'S BAD:
I didn't really like the scenes with Matron Malice. I understand that they're important in framing Drizzt's story, but I simply found them a bit tedious. Another issue I had with the book was Belwar's hands. As if the idea of having a hammer and a pickaxe for hands wasn't far fetched enough, Salvatore makes no effort to explain the practicalities that would lend credence to the idea. We're given no indication of how Belwar eats or dresses himself or anything like that (lord only knows how he pees!), which I felt made the idea seem all the more implausible.

Better than 'Homeland' but still not quite up to the epic mastery of 'The Icewind Dale' trilogy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent., 8 Jun 2009

I think the previously comments sum up the quality of this book. Excellent story, like someone stated previosly the book seems too short! Got through this in a few days, then again it's hard to stop reading it once you start. I will be buying the next installment in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exile, 24 Aug 2006
I've just finished this book and it was awesome. The first one was good but quite hard to get into because all of the characters basically looked the same so it was difficult to get a mental image of what was going on. However, this book is set away from Menzoberranzan so there are few passages with more than one dark elf.

I read this book because I saw it whilst buying another book and thought that I may as well read the second if I've read the first and I'm wholeheartedly glad I did this.

Salvatore keeps you guessing throughout and keeps you well enticed. Unfortunately, however, the storyline does lack a certain amount of depth and, while well written, you know that basically all the depth that's going to happen is that Drizzt is going to run into a few more enemies on the way to escape a dark past. This said, there are a few odd twists and turns in the book and Salvatore seems to direct them very well and always makes sure that the characters don't have a sudden change of personality half way through whatever might happen in the book.

To summarise I'd say go through the first book however difficult you may find it, just so you can have the pleasure of reading the second.
