5.0 out of 5 stars The real Jorg Haider, 22 Jul 1999
By A Customer
Sadly, very little information is available in English about the contemporary political scene in Austria. Melanie Sully has performed a valuable service by providing an excellent overview supported by photographs and statistical data. Her analysis of Jorg Haider the man, and his controversial career as leader of the Freedom Party is both informative and readable. For many years the media has referred to Haider and his party as ' extreme right wing ' and ' neo fascist ' but surprisingly this book blows away many misconceptions and encourages the reader to reach new or modified conclusions. Dr Sully describes the stagnant state of Austrian politics and the social and institutional malaise that has afflicted the country in recent decades. The author contrasts the record of the governing Socialist /Conservative coalition during the past 30 years and its failure to deliver significant change with the innovative and slickly presented programme of the Freedom Party. Jorg Haider is portrayed as an attractive but opportunist politician who intends to bring in a ' Thatcher Revolution ' should he ever win power. The author also discusses Haider's statements about Nazism and places them within the context of the ambivalent attitude towards the past that is unfortunately still pervasive in Austrian society. Readers who had previously dismissed Haider and his party will find a well reasoned and balanced account in this book - it should be considered essential reading for anyone with a serious interest in Austria today. In many ways the jury is still out on Jorg Haider because he has yet to exercise responsibility as a member of the national government and so perhaps there will be an opporunity for Dr Sully to return to this subject for a definitive reappraisal in 10 - 15 years from now.
