4.0 out of 5 stars Great scholarship - controversial conclusions., 26 Jan 2010
By J. P. Ryder "bazza" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This amazing book was first published in 1903 and, having first read it myself in the 1970's, I can only wonder at how it was received way back then - it seems pretty controversial even now in the new millennium.
(And my copy is abridged from the original, too).

The author was clearly well versed in anthropology and comparative religion, so, if, like me, you are not a trained scholar in these fields, you may struggle to keep up - as I did.

Nonetheless, it is a wonderful read as Robertson sets about placing early Christianity in its seminal context.

He methodically contrasts and compares the earliest Christian ideas with those that predated it among other belief systems.

The author skilfully demonstrates that virtually all of the `Christian' beliefs about the crucifixion, the sacrificial saviour, the Eucharist, the gospels and much, much more were all motifs that predated the newer Christian `cult'.

Even casual readers of this fascinating subject area - such as myself - will come across the familiar names of Apollonius, Mithra and many more.

I enjoyed the book immensely and I'm sure that if you have even a mild curiosity about Christianity's distant beginnings, you'll enjoy it too.
