4.0 out of 5 stars Most comphrensive book on speed!, 20 Nov 1999
At first glance this book appears to be for team sports; however, upon reading it, it can readily be applied to a yearly sprint program as well. It is not for younger athletes and a knowledge of yearly periodization is required to apply to a sprint program. At first, being a sprinter, i was skeptical of attempting plyometrics at the end of a workout, however i solved this by completing this stage prior to going into the speed endurance-form phase, and as a result, my monthly sprint tests amazed me. The diet section drastically changed my views on the way i was eating both prior to workouts and after, consequently i recover much quicker from workouts and feel stronger as well. I suggest a high school athlete confer with his or her coach before attempting this program, but nonetheless a great book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the hype!, 28 Mar 1999
By A Customer
The book deserves some credit because it does list contemporary training techniques in a comprehensive fashion, but it does not bring them together in a practical manner. There are also certain errors: 1) That you should do plyometrics last in a training program. Yeah right, high intensity training when you're tired. That removes the benefits and sets an individual up for injury. 2) Not mentioning true periodization for strength training. 3) Presenting impractical programs, especially for high school athletes. 4) Giving credibility to a fad diet (i.e. The Zone). That's almost shameful. If I had time, I'd list some other complaints. It's sad, but I have to admit that this is the best book out there for speed training. Just read it critically!

4.0 out of 5 stars comprehensive, informative book for improving speed., 26 Nov 1998

Very thorough approach to speed and conditioning for specific sports and activities. May want to expand weight training and resistance section. Too advanced for younger athletes (high school coaching).
